PR in the work force

The more I read about PR in the workforce, the more I understand our importance to creating an ethical program for your company and clients. In one of my other classes, we discuss the importance of what public relations bring to the intergrated marketing communication strategies that many companies opt to use over traditional advertising to build their brand and stregthen consumer relationships. I think that the role of PR is going to continue to become more vital to a company's success, as many employers now understand how essential PR professionals are to a company that is trying to be strategic and competitive.

Dallas Cowboys Case Study

I think this case was extremely interesting, to say the least, especially considering that this incident occurred during some of the peak years of the Cowboy's popularity as "America's Team." I really haven't made a definite decision in whether they made the best decision for the team or the public. It is very rare that such a huge incident was almost completely sealed by the organization and not revealed completely until years later; no one was willing to step forward with the information. There were pros and cons to their decisions. The major con would be that they weren't straightforward about the decision that they claimed to be a small, internal and family matter. They weren't exactly ethical with the "come clean, and come clean quick" method that a lot of PR professitonals use. They did the complete opposite and left the media and fans in the dark. This ultimately just furter hyped the incident and increased attention. The major pro of their decision was that they ultimately protected themselves; one of their star players was involved in the incident, and coming forth with all the details (which is now known as an assault) could have definitely jeopardized his parole situation and could have led to him not being able to participate in the upcoming season, which would have been extremely detrimental to the Cowboys. In many cases it is good to take the utilitarian approach to these cases, because usually the honest and ethical approach best affects the ppl involved. I'm indifferent on their approach because it wasn't ethical, but they did ultimately protect their players and solve the issue internally.

Cosmopolitanism: 2nd entry

There is a lot of correlation between Appiah's book and the profession of Public Relations. During chapters 4-6, Appiah further discusses a lot of the cultural differences that still exist between us on ALL issues: race/slavery, sexual orientation issues, cultural practices, women's rights and more. Similar to Public Relations, a professional is dealing with clients and the public of all different backgrounds, religious practices and moral beliefs. As Appiah stated, "conversation doesn't lead to a consensus on anything, especially not values; its enough that it helps people get used to one another." And such is to be expected of anyone working in the field of PR. Its important to know that you will Not understand or agree with the beliefs of the people that you will work with directly in many instances. However, it is important that you are able to get along with all individuals and build healthy relationships.

Cosmopolitanism: 1st entry

I found Appiah's Cosmopolitanism to be very interesting. With the question of "does everyone matter?" the answer would be a resounding yes!!! So many different cultures are imbedded into this earth, no two are exactly the same, yet its important to know that while everyone is different, everyone's voice should be equal, and more importantly, every culture's beliefs are important to you because it is important to them. America's corporate supply chain is a combination of many other countries and people with different values. Yet, obviously its essential that all relationships between the US and other countries can work together well!! We have seen what the effects of bad relationships (and the ignoring of other countries' feelings) can affect us directly. With that said, everyone is important, and acting as such is important to the consistency and success of the U.S. Supply Chain
