Week 4 and All the Old Stuff I didn't include before!

I noticed when I looked back on my blogs that I didn't discuss a few things. What I did find interesting about the PR profession was the explosion of the career after the Industrial Revolution, and the need for people in this profession. Many of the largest companies in American history were formed in the early 1900's, and desperately needed professionals whom would work with the publics. Aside from the Industrial Revolution, World War I also played a significant role in the advancement of PR professionals. I really thought the case study on Red Cross after September 11 was very interesting, but what I will say about the Red Cross is although they did make several key mistakes following the tragedy, they did recover nicely. It was good to know that mostly all the money that was donated to the organization was distributed by the first anniversay of the disaster. I was also glad to hear that most of the blood was put to some good use, and that therefore a lot of the blood was not wasted. Chapter 4 was an essential chapter in the book because it showed all the different kinds of publics in the PR profession. There are many different ways that a public can be identified, so that was good information to have. I am off to do more studying for this first test, until next time!

Defining PR and 9/11

This week was a very exciting one in class! I enjoyed the background information that our professor provided for us, especially with the web pages that were posted the day of. It was very interesting to see the msnbc website that still had so many other distractions going on on the website page when the country was in a state of chaos. It was also very interesting to find out what many of my colleagues' beliefs of Public Relations was. For instance, I recieved one statement from a friend who replied that PR was "relating to the public." There were also statements like "Creating publicity for a client and/or marketing." I prefer the book's definition that PR is the communication between a company/agency and it's publics, a two-way communication." I really enjoy this PR Principles book because it gives you a lot of information of Public Relations in the corporate market. I would personally like to find more information of the event planning aspect of PR, since it is the field that I am most interested in (well, at least for now!). I will be posting again shortly, so until next time! Wait, and I must also say that I was very impressed with the number of PR jobs that are available! The pay rates of these jobs were also much higher than what I expected!

Chapters 1 and 2

These chapters were both very beneficial to me as a PR major. Defining public relations has always seemed a little gray, but I think their definition of the "communications between management and its publics" is a good choice of words. I would like to see more information on the aspect of event planning in Public Relations because that is the aspect that I am most interested in (well that and corporate PR!). I really like that textbook because, unlike most books, I actually stay interested in the text! I also liked how they showed the examples of PR gone good and bad in Chapter 2. Til next time!

First 242o posting

Hey guys. I really think I am going to enjoy this PR Principles class this semester. I am not sure if I posted this blogger the right way (I didn't have the paper in front of me), so I will post back a little later! Toodles!
